Marcus Mahy, who was involved in serious accident in last weekend’s Total 24 Hours of Spa, underwent successful surgery on Monday in Belgium.

The 53-year-old British driver was airlifted to a hospital in Liege after his Kessel Racing Ferrari collided with another Ferrari, driven by Vadim Kogay, in the early stages of the race.

The race was red flagged for the helicopter to land on the circuit, where Mahy was initially unconscious. Mahy is believed to have underwent surgery to his neck, as first reported on Sunday.

“Marcus Mahy, driver of the No. 111 Kessel Racing Ferrari, transported to the CHU hospital in Liege, during the course of the 2014 Total 24 Hours of Spa, underwent successful surgery yesterday and continues to make good progress,” a statement from the SRO read.

“His family would like to thank everybody for all their support and good wishes.”

Mahy’s accident was just one of a number of serious shunts during the race that sent no fewer than three drivers to the hospital.
