Following numerous spy shots and previews, Audi officially revealed the new Audi R8 LMS today at the Geneva Motor Show.

The new generation mid-engined sports car, ready for the new GT3 regulations of 2016, is set to compete in the Nürburgring 24 Hours and the 24 Hours of Spa later this season.

Quattro GmBh began testing the new GT3 car in early 2014 and the company will begin to take orders in the second half of this year, with delivery of the first cars to customers set for the end of 2015.

The new R8 LMS is lighter and safer than the first generation of R8 GT3 cars. Despite implementing various new safety measures, quattro GmbH managed to reduce the base weight of the car from 1,250 to 1,225 kg.

It features a modified front structure and a CFRP crash element at the rear, as well as a rescue opening in the roof, mean that the car will surpass current safety requirements.

Audi’s 5.2-liter V10 engine, with a power output of up to 585 hp, will power the car and a new six-speed transmission with paddle shifters was specifically developed. The system is said to be significantly lighter than its predecessor.

There are also revised aerodynamics, including a fully lined underfloor and a conceptually integrated rear diffusor, resulting in reduced dimensions of the rear wing, without increasing drag.

Other modifications include a redesigned wheel wells will result in an improved airflow and improved fresh air circulation in the cockpit, two 250 liters per second at 200 km/h.
