The new Ford Mustang has been officially approved as a GT4 car, with the Detroit manufacturer confirming its homologation by the SRO.

The Multimatic-built car, which has competed in both the IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge and Pirelli World Challenge this year under series-specific homologations, received its final approval on July 31, per a Ford spokesperson.

Ford Performance Global Director Dave Pericak told Sportscar365 in June that the relocation of the oil tank had been one of the holdups in the approval process, which was initially intended for the start of the year.

The Mustang GT4 is now eligible for competition in all GT4 championships worldwide, including the GT4 European Series, British GT Championship and Blancpain GT Series Asia, as well as endurance races such as the Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 Hour and Motul Sepang 12 Hours.

KohR Motorsports and VOLT Racing are expected to complete the Continental Tire Challenge season, meanwhile, with their newly approved GT4 cars, with PF Racing having made multiple PWC starts in the GTS division.

Additional customer teams are expected, both in North America and Europe, by the end of the year, with Ford recently having hosted an open test at Anglesey Circuit in Wales for prospective customers.

It’s understood M-Sport has been tipped to provide technical support to Mustang GT4 customers in Europe.
