Joao Barbosa topped the time charts in Friday’s opening practice for the Chevrolet Sports Car Classic at Detroit’s Belle Isle.

Barbosa laid down a best lap of 1:24.239 in the No. 5 Action Express Racing Corvette DP late in the 90-minute session, which was interrupted by four red flags.

The defending IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship champion edged out teammate Dane Cameron by 0.723 seconds, with Jordan Taylor making it a Corvette 1-2-3 sweep in the session.

Ozz Negri was fourth in the No. 60 Michael Shank Racing Ligier JS P2 Honda he’ll share with Katherine Legge this weekend, while Ryan Dalziel completed the top-five in the No. 90 Visit Florida Racing Corvette DP.

Renger van der Zande led the way in Prototype Challenge, reeling off a 1:27.030 in his No. 8 Starworks Motorsport Oreca FLM09.

GT Daytona saw the No 73 Park Place Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 R of Joerg Bergmeister end up quickest, ahead of the No. 33 Riley Motorsports Dodge Viper GT3-R and the pair of Turner Motorsport BMW M6 GT3s.

The session, which started late due to track cleanup from previous track activity, was halted early for an accident involving the GTD championship-leading No. 63 Scuderia Corsa Ferrari 488 GT3 of Christina Nielsen.

Nielsen reported she was hit by a PC car and made contact with the wall. The car later returned to action with a spare nose.

Debris brought out the second red, with both the No. 48 Paul Miller Racing Lamborghini Huracan GT3 and No. 70 Mazda stopping on track to bring out separate red flags as well.

Practice 2 is scheduled for 12:55 p.m. ET.
