Taylor Takes Monterey Pole

Ricky Taylor will start Sunday’s America’s Tire 250 from the overall pole, as he and Jordan Taylor look to lock up the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship title in the penultimate race of the season this weekend.

Taylor stormed to his fifth Prototype pole of the year, and third straight, having reeled off a 1:16.853 in the No. 10 Cadillac DPi-V.R.

The second-generation driver outran the No. 5 Action Express Racing Cadillac of Christian Fittipaldi by a hefty 0.829 seconds.

Fittipaldi’s late flyer denied the No. 90 Visit Florida Racing Ligier JS P217 Gibson of Marc Goossens a front row start, with the Belgian set to roll off from third.

Defending Prototype champion Eric Curran, in the No. 31 Action Express Cadillac, and Jose Gutierrez’s No. 52 PR1/Mathiasen Motorsports Ligier completed the top-five overall and in class.

The America’s Tire 250 gets underway Sunday at 2:05 p.m. PDT, with live coverage on FS1.

    Just a 1:16.853 damn the lmp2 Arx-01b and rs spyder from 2008 were running 1:10’s here.

      They were also wider, bigger rear wing, pure race prepped engines, although only around 520 hp. They had wayyyyy better tires, and the weighed like 350 pounds less.

      2008 LMP2’s had 130 kg less.

      Well, taking into account Continental crappy rubber, 950Kg compared to 830-850Kg from the old cars, so wait until 2019 to see a massive lap time improvement

        Will only be a few seconds. Have to wait until 2021 and see if DPi use LMP1 chassis.

          Is the same type of chassis, only with added weight, less overall power and less downforce, if get rid of the ballast, give it more power, in other words, unrestrict Nissan and Cadillac engine, give proper aero and Michelins it could be on par with LMP1, or at least with way less gap between them

      Tyler, how fast did the Can-Am and IMSA GTP cars lap Laguna Seca?

      The thing is the ALMS, just like Can-Am and IMSA GTP, failed to survive for one reason. It was simply not sustainable.

      And maybe if IMSA didn’t have to hold the Caddys back to make them “raceable” with the world-spec LMP2/spec Gibsons, the DPi times might be closer.

    Level 5 back in 2012 did 1:15:xxx and with just 450 hp.

      The Cadillac has now around that number, the BOP took away from it 150Hp and half the downforce it has, so they run with less downforce than in Daytona, so it could had been faster

        The caddy does not have 450. More like 575-600. The BoP took away their advantage of having near 650-700 the bwginning of The season

          Not true. Cadillac was 600hp by IMSA at Daytona 24 and lost 80hp to now. 33.1 restrictor to 30.4 restrictor and now also has mandated gearing by IMSA to reduce TQ at rear wheels in gear 1 and 2. It is the slowest in straight line speed since COTA. Look at IMSA website for competitors at bottom page. All stats (top speed per event) are there.

            Is longer gearing in gear 1,2 and 3, reduced downforce, running with less downforce than even in Daytona, in Road America it was i think atop the speed traps again due to that massively reduced downforce they have

    Well now, that put those upstarts in the Nissan in their place and the Caddies back in their rightful place.

    How dare that Nissan actually win a race! Rightfully BOPed even though the Taylor boys and many here said they only won because the Taylors were thinking “points”.

    Order is restored. Praise NASCAR.

        Alex, you obviously never watched the Grand-Am days. You obviously don’t know what you’re talking about.

        When did Grand-Am champions and race winners CGR, Shank, Brumos, Starworks, SpeedSource, Turner, TRG, Corsa, Farnbacher-Noles, Synergy, etc., race with GM?

        From 2006 to 2013 (the last eight years of Grand-Am) the winning car at the Rolex24 was not a GM-powered DP.

        And despite eight attempts (from 2006-2013) with Pontiacs, Corvettes and Camaros from several different teams, GM was never “handed” a GT win at the Rolex24 by Jim France, Grand-Am or anyone else.

        Anyway, Grand-Am no longer exists. So after almost four years can we move on?

      Obvious to everyone but you. They also added downforce to the Nissan and took away even more from the Cadillac. Downforce is far more important than the wee bit of HP taken from only the very top of the Nissans rev range at Laguna Seca.

      At this point Cadillac are down around 100hp, have about 1/2 the downforce as anyone else in P2/DPi, are carrying more ballast and have the lower gears off limits. How much more do they need to be handicapped?

          If it is such a well known fact, why then would anybody even bother to take part in the series if they’re never going to win? Why don’t they go elsewhere?

      Obvious, a wise man once said, “Don’t count your chickens before they’ve hatched.”

      They’ll be plenty of time to whine and launch crazy conspiracy theories (ESM has won at Laguna Seca before in the new merged IMSA series) AFTER the race. Trust me.

      While you’re waiting for the race to start, think about how the mighty NASCAR “Evil Empire” failed to prevent ESM from winning the two marquis IMSA races at Daytona and Sebring (and almost Road Atlanta, too) just last year.

      Hmm….
