Memo Gidley returned to the wheel of a prototype for the first time since his devastating accident four years ago, having turned laps in FMO Racing’s Norma M30 LMP3 car at Sonoma Raceway this week.

The 47-year-old Californian, who sustained serious injuries in the 2014 Rolex 24 at Daytona in a Bob Stallings Racing Corvette DP, completed a successful test in the LMP3 contender, ahead of a possible outing in prototype competition later this year.

The Norma is among the LMP3 cars eligible in IMSA Prototype Challenge presented by Mazda series, which kicked off its season at Daytona in January.

“[It] felt right at hone, and who knows what the future will be?” Gidley wrote on his Web site. “[It] actually felt just like my Rattlesnake/Aluminos Vortex 125cc shifter kart [but] with a higher top speed! Thanks to Charles and the team.”

Gidley made his professional racing return in last year’s Pirelli World Challenge Sprint season-ending round at Sonoma, in a TKO Motorports Porsche 911 GT3 R, followed one week later by an outing in IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge competition in a Maserati GT4 car.

He has since returned to the site of his accident at Daytona, having turned laps in a Doran-built Ford GT in the HSR Classic 24 Hours.
