Longtime Rebellion Racing No.1  mechanic Damien Lewis died Tuesday in a traffic accident near the Nürburgring. He was 40.

Lewis, along with other crew members, had remained in Germany to prepare the team’s freight for the upcoming stretch of FIA World Endurance Championship flyaway races.

No other members of the Rebellion team were involved in the accident.

“We are shocked by this tragic news. Damo was a huge part of our team and his loss will be deeply felt by his many friends and his family,” team manager Bart Hayden said.

“A very humble character, Damo had a quiet demeanour and a kind heart. He has been No. 1 mechanic on Rebellion Racing cars since the beginning and he will be greatly missed not only for his contribution to our team, but for his warmth and personality.

“The world will be an emptier place without him.”

Sportscar365 sends its condolences to Damo’s family and friends at this difficult time.
