In a stunning development, the first two cars in the GT Daytona class, both Lamborghini Huracán GT3s, have crashed into each other in the 11th hour of the 54th Rolex 24 at Daytona.

Bryce Miller in the Paul Miller Lamborghini was leading Justin Marks in the Change Lamborghini, but contact between the two occurred going into Turn 1.

Both cars spun out, going down by the pit exit lane and then sliding back across the road into the racing line. The Paul Miller car appeared to suffer significant rear wheel and tire damage.

It was later confirmed the Paul Miller car had changed the rear suspension, left front toe link and rear bodywork of its Huracán GT3.

“It’s a real shame and it’s really unnecessary that our contention for this race is done at the halfway point,” Bryce Miller said, from his vantage point. “The other car really rammed into us; it wasn’t contact that you could attempt to recover from.

“I was committed to a full braking zone, pulling downshifts and setting up for turn one, and he came from a distance back and did a banzai maneuver. The contact he made with the left-rear corner was really significant, enough to completely spin the car down the inside pit wall.

“It really chewed the car up and we lost a lot of time in the garage. I feel really disheartened, I feel bad for the team and my co-drivers. This is going to be a really hard one to get over, knowing that we had such a good car.”

Tristan Nunez in the No. 55 Mazda did well to avoid the two spinning cars after exiting the pits himself.

This brought out the 12th full course caution of the race.

It takes what was easily the two fastest cars of the race out of victory contention. Coupled with the early electrical problems for the O’Gara Motorsport Lamborghini, suddenly Lamborghini has seen most of its five cars affected in some way.

Class leaders under this yellow are Max Angelelli of Wayne Taylor Racing overall and in Prototype, Augusto Farfus in one of the BMWs in GT Le Mans, Robert Alon of PR1/Mathiasen Motorsports in Prototype Challenge and Shane van Gisbergen in the Alex Job Racing Porsche in GT Daytona.
