GMG to Debut Porsche GT4 Clubsport MR in Monterey

GMG Racing will give the new Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport MR its North American debut in this weekend’s Pirelli World Challenge season-ending round at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, as part of a ramped up four-class effort featuring all-Porsche machinery.

The California-based squad will field its Porsche 911 GT3 R in both the Sprint and SprintX rounds for Brent Holden, with newly crowned GT Cup champion Alec Udell joining him for the pair of 60-minute SprintX races.

Chris Thompson will drive GMG’s GT Cup class Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car in the Sprint race, with team principal James Sofronas debuting the Clubsport MR in the GTS class.

The team recently took delivery of the first-ever Clubsport MR, which has been built to comply with SRO GT4 specification. It will be the first Clubsport to race in PWC competition.

“When we made the decision to return to Porsche as our primary marque for competition in 2016, it was built firmly on the ability to create a vertically integrated platform that could cater to customers and drivers of all ages and skill levels,” Sofronas said.

“Obviously, the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup is arguably the most storied car in the sport, and with the diversity of venues to race in around the globe, it’s an incredible machine that we’ve supported since the company’s beginnings.

“Of course, the all-new Porsche 911 GT3 R presents an aspirational machine for those looking to compete at the top-level, but on the other end, the Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport presents a whole new gateway and opportunity for the beginning competitor.

“The Clubsport is an amazing car, and more importantly it presents a very manageable entrée in to racing and track-days with a car that is fun for the pros, but also very well catered to the less experienced driver.

“This presents the missing link for a group like ours that services racing experiences at all levels, and it’s great to have a new ‘first step’ vehicle for customers.

“The ability to show up at a venue such as Pirelli World Challenge and demonstrate how we can efficiently and effectively run all three of Porsche’s signature vehicles makes me realize how much I appreciate being aligned with such a great manufacturer.”
