Sandberg Leads Mustang GT4 Front Row Sweep at The Glen

Brett Sandberg has led a Ford Mustang GT4 front row sweep for Saturday’s Continental Tire 240 at Watkins Glen, following a frantic qualifying session for the fourth round of the IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge season.

Sandberg took his No. 80 AWA Mustang GT4 to a 1:56.454 lap following a five-minute shootout for GS competitors due to a heavy accident early in the 15-minute timed session.

It marked Sandberg’s first Continental Tire Challenge pole position.

Chad McCumbee qualified second in the No. 8 Multimatic Motorsports-run Mustang GT4, followed by the No.  92 Ramsey Racing Mercedes-AMG GT4 of Alexandre Premat and Indy Dontje’s No. 57 Winward Racing/HTP Motorsport Mercedes GT4.

The No. 7 VOLT Racing Mustang GT4 of Trent Hindman completed the top-five.

Nearly all of the GS teams had only two flying laps following a crash for the No. 4 Team TGM Mercedes GT4 of Ted Giovanis, who made heavy contact with the barriers at the Bus Stop Chicane.

Giovanis reportedly escaped serious injury, although the car sustained significant damage. 

The No. 5 Bodymotion Racing Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport MR of Stevan McAleer is believed to have also been involved in the incident.

Compass Audi 1-2-3 in TCR

Pierre Kleinubing grabbed pole in TCR, leading a 1-2-3 sweep for Compass Racing.

The Brazilian reeled off a 1:48.028 lap in his No. 75 Audi RS 3 LMS TCR, edging out teammate Britt Casey Jr. by 0.011 seconds.

Teammate Kuno Wittmer was third in the No. 74 Audi, with class debutant Kenton Koch fourth in class in the No. 12 eEuroparts.com Racing Audi.

The No. 81 BimmerWorld Racing BMW 328i of Devin Jones, meanwhile, picked up the class pole in ST.

Jones outpaced the No. 52 MINI JCW of of Colin Mullan by nearly two seconds.

The Continental Tire 240 gets underway Saturday at 1:55 p.m. EDT with live coverage on IMSA.tv.
