Newly crowned Prototype champion Wayne Taylor Racing is poised for an expanded effort in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship next year, in operating up to two Lamborghini Huracan GT3s in the GT Daytona class.

Taylor has confirmed he’s closing in on a factory-supported deal with the Italian manufacturer, that would see the team mount a dual-class effort in 2018.

“Leaving the track, we’re at 70 percent sure we’ll end up running at least one car for Lamborghini,” Taylor told Sportscar365. “I think the team is up to it.”

The Indianapolis-based operation is no stranger to Lamborghini, having fielded multiple Huracán LP 620-2 Super Trofeos in the popular single-make series under the Prestige Performance banner over the last three years.

Prestige’s Trent Hindman and Riccardo Agostini currently lead the Pro class championship heading into next month’s Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America season finale and World Final in Imola.

“We’ll have to juggle between the GTD car and the Super Trofeos,” Taylor said. “That still has to work itself out.

“They might want to run two GTD cars. Depending on that, a decision will be made on how we will handle things on our Super Trofeo part of the business.”

Either way, Taylor indicated that Prestige will play a role in both programs next year.

Drivers for the potential two-car effort, meanwhile, have yet to be determined, although paddock rumors have linked a number of leading GT drivers to the Lamborghini-supported operation.

Hindman, for instance, is currently a Silver-rated driver, with the team needing at least one Bronze/Silver per car.

“It’s still early days,” Taylor said. “We have a couple of guys out of Super Trofeo that are really good. There’s also one or two drivers in our pit lane at the moment that want to make some moves.”

With a Lamborghini GTE program potentially in the pipeline for as early as 2019, it’s believed WTR could be positioning itself for the factory effort, should it get the green light.

It’s understood a final decision on whether to go ahead with a Huracan GTE car has not yet been made, and potentially delayed due to the introduction of the new ‘Super Season’ schedule in the FIA World Endurance Championship.
