Dan Welch suffered a punctured lung and broken ribs in the Hankook 24 Hours of Dubai qualifying accident on Thursday, the British racing driver revealed today.

Welch, who competed in the No. 62 STP Racing Porsche 991 Cup in Dubai, was hit by Isaac Tutumlu in the final minutes of qualifying. The Spanish driver lost control of his Ferrari and crashed into the Porsche.

Although Welch was initially diagnosed with bruisings and possible cracked bones, a visit to the emergency room in the UAE and a subsequent scan revealed a collapsed lung on top of broken ribs and several bruisings.

Tutumlu suffered scratches on his arm and leg and complained about pain in his back and knee after the crash, which resulted in the two teams having to withdraw their cars.

“I had a big crash on my fastest lap due to some oil or cooling fluid on the track that was not signaled by the marshals, even though they admitted to have seen something on the track,” a clearly disappointed Tutumlu said after the accident.

An onboard video of the crash can be found here.
