Farfus, Blomqvist to Join Wittmann for Macau

Augusto Farfus and Tom Blomqvist are the latest drivers to be confirmed for next month’s FIA GT World Cup in Macau, with the BMW factory aces set to join the previously announced Marco Wittmann at the wheel of BMW M6 GT3 cars for the Nov. 16-19 event.

Farfus will pilot the 18th BMW Art Car for BMW Team Schnitzer, while fellow DTM star Blomqvist will be at the wheel of a ROWE Racing-entered BMW.

At least three BMW factory drivers will take part in the event, with two-time DTM champion Wittmann having been confirmed in September to line up alongside Virgin Australia Supercars driver Chaz Mostert in AAI Motorsports’ two-car effort.

“I have been to Macau several times and love this track. It is very demanding and doesn’t allow for even the smallest of mistakes,” Wittmann said. “With its demanding mix of fast and very narrow sections, it really gets the pulse rate of every driver going.

“I enjoyed great success there in Formula 3 in particular, and made it onto the podium. My GT experience there so far has been in the BMW Z4 GT3. I’m excited to see how the BMW M6 GT3 fares on the narrow streets.

“I’m really looking forward to my final race of the year and hope that my win at the DTM finale in Hockenheim will spur me on in Macau.”

BMW joins previously announced factory or works-supported efforts from Audi, Honda and Ferrari for the event, with Porsche expected to field Romain Dumas and defending race winner Laurens Vanthoor. 

Organizers have imposed an entry cap of 25 cars, and are requiring that all drivers are either Gold or Platinum-rated, following incident-filled events in both 2015 and last year.

A full entry list is expected to be released within the next week.
