While having already established a strong base of customer teams in IMSA, Lamborghini’s next step in its North American expansion plans could be in Pirelli World Challenge, as the Italian manufacturer looks to double the number of Huracan GT3s competing in the U.S. by next year.

“Our partnership with IMSA is giving us a lot of benefits with the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo, and also with the GT3,” Head of Lamborghini Motorsport Giorgio Sanna told Sportscar365.

“But it’s clear we’re evaluating other opportunities for the future in GT3. We’re looking with interest in Pirelli World Challenge. We’ll see step by step.”

The Huracan GT3 made its North American debut in January’s Rolex 24 at Daytona, with four full-season customer entries from Change Racing, Paul Miller Racing and Dream Racing set to complete the remainder of the WeatherTech Championship season.

Sanna said he’s received interest from multiple teams wanting to purchase cars for PWC, but with production being limited to 40 cars this year, and all of them having already been sold, the focus is already on 2017.

Based on the current level of interest, Sanna said he could see upwards of eight Huracan GT3s competing across North America, between the two championships.

“Next year, step by step, we’ll increase the number of GT3 cars on the grid and we will be able to also support more teams in different championships,” he said.

“It’s clear that the characteristics of the USA is the logistics. We won’t enter different series until we’re sure we’ll be able to guarantee the right services to our customer teams.

“If there’s an opportunity to do Pirelli World Challenge with good teams, based on the demand of the customer teams, we’ll be ready.”
