Father-and-son Johnny and Canaan O’Connell will team up in a Robinson Racing Chevrolet Camaro GT4.R in next weekend’s Pirelli World Challenge GTS SprintX race at Utah Motorsports Campus.
The four-time PWC GT champion will make his series return, with the former Cadillac factory driver sharing the No. 74 car with his son, with full-season drivers Gar Robinson and Shane Lewis back in the No. 72 Camaro GT4 for the SprintX season finale.
It will mark the first time Johnny and Canaan have driven together.
“When Canaan was a boy, I recall watching Mario Andretti racing with his kids and thinking that has to be the coolest thing a father can experience,” said Johnny.
“Getting the chance to do that at this stage of my career – with my son – is something I could not be more thankful for.
“A big thanks to George Robinson, Robinson Racing, and of course Cadillac for letting me take advantage of this opportunity.
“It’s been about nine months since I was last in a car, but I’m hopeful that the rust will fly off quickly and that we’ll be able to once again put in a strong performance for Chevrolet, this time in a Camaro.
“Hopefully we can build upon this foundation and find ourselves in a good position for 2019.”
Canaan, who took part in the TC championship last year in a Chevrolet Sonic, is set for his GTS class debut.
“Needless to say, hearing about the opportunity to co-pilot a Chevy Camaro with my Dad and Robinson Racing was, by far, the most exciting news of my life,” he said,
“Spending 2017 World Challenge race weekends together had already been a dream come true for me, but I never envisioned the possibility of actually sharing a car with my Dad.
“This is a special moment in my life, and I am so thankful to everyone at Robinson Racing and Chevrolet for providing us this opportunity.”
