Phoenix Racing Enters Two Audis

Phoenix Racing brings two Audi R8 LMS ultras to the Blancpain Sprint Series…

After fielding one car in the FIA GT Series last season, Phoenix Racing will return to GT sprint racing this year, as the German team will bring two Audi R8 LMS ultras to the Blancpain Sprint Series.

Phoenix has drafted in Nürburgring 24h winner Marc Basseng and former Formula 1 driver Markus Winkelhock, who together clinched the FIA GT1 World Championship back in 2012 with All-Inkl.com Münnich Motorsport (Mercedes).

Basseng and Alessandro Latif will team up in the No. 5 Audi. The soon-to-be 18-year-old graduates from single seaters and already drove the Audi R8 in the first two rounds of the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship with Flying Lizard Motorsports.

Niki Mayr-Melnhof makes the switch form the Belgian Audi Club Team WRT, but stays within the Audi ranks. The Austrian will share the No. 6 Audi with Winkelhock.

“We’re delighted about two strong new signings”, says Phoenix Team Director Ernst Moser. “Niki Mayr-Melnhof has a lot of experience and showed his class on finishing last year’s GT Series in third place.”

“Alessandro Latif is a young, up-and-coming driver with excellent prospects who provided a sampling of his talent right on his first two runs in the R8.”

“Together with Marc Basseng and Markus Winkelhock we’re perfectly positioned to be in contention for victories and the championship title in the Blancpain Sprint Series.”

Both Phoenix Audis will carry a brand new white and grey livery at the start of the season in Nogaro.
