Aston Martin GT3 outfit R-Motorsport has signed former BMW factory driver Tom Blomqvist for the 2020 season.

Blomqvist, 26, is set to drive for the Swiss-entered R-Motorsport squad in the GT World Challenge endurance and sprint competitions next year.

The Englishman recently left BMW after five years, following the manufacturer’s announcement that Bruno Spengler would be replacing him in its IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship GTLM driver lineup.

Blomqvist won the Total 24 Hours of Spa for BMW in 2018 and also represented the marque in DTM for two seasons.

“We are all very pleased to welcome Tom to R-Motorsport and are very excited for what he brings to the team,” said R-Motorsport team principal Dr. Florian Kamelger.

“Tom is a proven GT racer and has always been a quick driver in every championship he has competed. His balance of experience and youth makes him a valuable asset to our team and we are looking forward to having a successful future working together.”

Blomqvist, who finished second between Esteban Ocon and Max Verstappen in the 2014 FIA European Formula 3 Championship, is now set to race an Aston Martin for the first time.

It will also mark his first competitive spell in a GT car that isn’t a BMW.

“Firstly, I’d like to say a huge thank you to BMW for their support over the last five years and I wish them all the best for the future,” said Blomqvist.

“I am extremely excited about joining R-Motorsport, which is undoubtedly one of the best teams in the world of endurance racing.

“Having competed against them a number of times, I know how competitive they are and how professionally ran the entire organization is and how ambitious they are moving forward, which is incredibly exciting for me as a driver.”
