Andy Meyrick has returned to the UK following several days in intensive care at a hospital in Belgium, following a heavy crash during the Total 24 Hours of Spa on Sunday.

The Welshman sustained severe fractures in the incident, which also involved Juergen Krebs, and has been kept in the intensive care ward at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Liege for the past six days.

Meyrick, in the No. 31 Team Parker Racing Bentley Continental GT3, collided with Krebs’ Attempto Racing Lamborghini Huracan GT3 at Raidillon, causing the race to be red-flagged for almost two hours.

“The accident was unavoidable”, he said. “The Lamborghini had just speared back across the track right into my path.

“The light board was still green as I went into Eau Rouge and as I came over the brow, I didn’t have time to lift and unfortunately at 170 mph, you don’t get away without a big impact when hitting a stationary car.

“I’m glad to hear Juergen is in recovery and I look forward to being back out on track myself as soon as possible.

“I want to thank the Spa Medical crew and the Marshals that got me out of the car as well as the team here at the hospital who have helped treat me the past six days.

“I want to thank Team Parker Racing for all their help and support too, the crew put together a fantastic car. It was great being back behind the wheel of the GT3 and I was very happy with my performance. I hope I get the chance to race with the team again.”

Meyrick hopes to make a full recovery to return to racing next month, and is targeting to return to the GT4 European Series at the Hungaroring on Sept. 1-2, following his wedding at the end of the month.
