Laurens Vanthoor has been ruled out of winning the 2015 Blancpain GT Championship after sustaining a fractured leg and hip in last weekend’s Sprint Series Qualifying Race at Misano.

The Belgian collided with the HTP Bentley of  Jules Szymkowiak before slamming hard into the barriers, destroying his Belgian Audi Club Team WRT Audi R8 LMS ultra.

While it was initially reported Vanthoor escaped serious injury, with only a sprained foot, further medical tests upon his arrival back home have diagnosed the GT star with a fractured leg and double fracture of his hip.

He and co-driver Robin Frijns currently hold a 27-point lead in the overall Blancpain GT standings over Bentley Team HTP’s Maxi Buhk, with Buhk and Sprint Series co-driver Vincent Abril just 8 points behind the Audi pairing in the Sprint Series championship.

WRT has yet to name Vanthoor’s replacement for this weekend’s Sprint Series season finale at Zandvoort, where Frijns will still have a chance of claiming both titles, but solo.
