Championship leaders Alex Riberas and Christopher Mies are set to make the start of this afternoon’s Blancpain GT Series Sprint Cup race at the Nürburgring despite a crash in qualifying earlier.
Belgian Audi Club Team WRT is repairing the No. 1 Audi R8 LMS GT3 after Mies went off track with a brake failure in Qualifying 2.
The car set times in both qualifying sessions but the brake failure and subsequent damage casted doubt over the car’s readiness for the race.
“After an unusual failure in Q2 causing a crash, our strong crew is working hard to get Car #1 fixed for Race 1 later today,” the team posted on Twitter. “Let’s encourage our great mechanics!”
Riberas will start this afternoon’s race, which will get underway at 2:05 p.m. local time, from third position while Mies will line up 14th for Sunday’s finale.
They are tied for the championship lead with AKKA ASP drivers Raffaele Marciello and Michael Meadows, with all four on 74 points.
A total of 33 points are available across this weekend’s two races, with 16.5 available for a win.
Third-placed Christian Engelhart and Mirko Bortolotti began to close the gap by scoring a bonus point for Race 1 pole earlier but the Grasser Racing Team duo are currently 15.5 points down.
