GT4 East Titles to be Decided at Road America

Titles in Pirelli GT4 America East competition will be decided this weekend at Road America, in the final round of the season for the regional series, which again combines with SprintX competitors for the pair of 60-minute races.

Karl Wittmer heads into Wisconsin with a slim two-point lead in the Pro-Am championship, although uniquely achieved by driving for two different teams.

Wittmer, who started the season at the wheel of a Precision Driving Tech BMW M4 GT4, made the switch to Ian Lacy Racing at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park when the Marko Radisic-owned operation couldn’t make it to Canada.

Podium finishes for the Canadian at Watkins Glen has kept him in the lead, although only by a thin margin, thanks to a sweep of the GT4 East weekend by Park Place Motorsports’ Alan Brynjolfsson and Trent Hindman, who sit second in the title race.

Wittmer will be joined by Drew Staveley this weekend, in a bid to increase his title hopes.

A third team remains in with a chance of the title, with Classic BMW’s Justin Raphael and Stevan McAleer just five points behind Wittmer.

In GT4 East Am, TRG’s Sean Gibbons enters the weekend with a two-point lead over Murillo Racing’s Matt Fassnacht and Christian Szymczak, who won last time out at Road America.

Gibbons will share driving duties with Derek DeBoer, who has been with him in the No. 17 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport since the second round of the season at Virginia International Raceway.

Epic Motorsports’ James Clay and Randy Mueller, meanwhile, sit third in the class title race, just three points behind Fassnacht and Szymczak.

18 Entries for SprintX Races at Road America

A total of 18 combined entries are set for this weekend’s SprintX/East races, with SprintX competitors going on to Las Vegas Motor Speedway next month for their season finale alongside GT4 West teams.

Among the changes to the entry list include the return of Alec Udell to GMG Racing, with the newly crowned GT4 European Series champion set to share driving duties of the No. 2 Porsche with Jason Bell.

GT racing veteran David Donohue, who is now Bronze-rated, will join Jarett Andretti behind the wheel of the No. 36 Andretti Autosport McLaren 570S GT4, in what will be Andretti’s third different co-driver of the season.

One point separates Greg Liefooghe and Sean Quinlan from nolasport’s Jason Hart and Matt Travis in the SprintX Pro-Am title chase, thanks to five wins in the last seven races for the Stephen Cameron Racing duo.

Team Panoz Racing’s Preston Calvert and Matt Keegan, meanwhile, hold a hefty 26-point lead in the SprintX Am championship over John Allen and Kris Wilson. 

Track action gets underway on Friday, with the two races set for Saturday at 5 p.m. CT and Sunday at 12:10 p.m. local time.
