Stefan Johansson will return to the wheel of a Ferrari, having been confirmed in Scuderia Corsa’s lineup for its Pirelli World Challenge SprintX program.

The ex-Formula One driver and sports car ace will team up with reigning Sprint GTA champion Martin Fuentes in the No. 7 Ferrari 458 Italia GT3, which will compete for GT Pro/Am class honors, beginning with this weekend’s season-opener at Virginia International Raceway.

For Johansson, who also serves as the team’s sporting director, it marks the 60-year-old Swede’s return to full-time competition after a number of years away.

“I really look forward to returning to the cockpit with this program, it’s always something special to be racing for Ferrari” he said.

“We’ve worked hard to develop this organization, and having Martin return to the team is a great testament to what we continue to build. He obviously had a tremendous 2016 season, so I’m confident that with the two of us teaming together we can have a great season, we’re both prepared and ready.

“The Pirelli World Challenge’s SprintX championship is a really interesting approach, and the current roster of teams and drivers is at a very high level, it should be a great experience.”

Fuentes, who scored nine class wins en route to the title last year, is looking forward to the new challenge in the two-driver format.

The Mexican driver is set for a dual-series campaign, also competing in Ferrari Challenge with the Giacomo Mattioli-led organization.

“There’s two championships that we’ll be fighting for this year, and I’m very excited and motivated,” Fuentes said.

“I’m in great shape, and have done my pre-season training and I’m in the best shape of my life and I’m looking forward to a good start for both championships in the Pirelli World Challenge and Ferrari Challenge as well.”
