GTS cars have been added to next month’s Pirelli World Challenge round at Long Beach, series officials confirmed on Friday.

As reported by Sportscar365, PWC had been planning the integration of selected GT4-spec cars on an invitational basis for the Long Beach event, which was initially announced as a GT-only race.

A total of 6-8  cars are expected to run alongside the GT and GTA classes on a non-points basis.

It will mark the first combined GT-GTS race since 2014, prior to the separation of the two classes amid the GT3 platform’s rapid growth.

“The customer interest in the GTS class has been sensational already this year with 28 cars at St. Petersburg and 38 entries at COTA,” said WC Vision President and CEO Greg Gill.

“The manufacturers are extremely interested in the GT4 platform around the world and our teams wanted to participate at Long Beach too.

“So, we talked with the GTS group and made the GTS portion an invitational event.

“We believe racing fans at Long Beach will enjoy the GT4 machines at the iconic street course.”

The addition of selected GTS cars is expected to bring the total race entry to more than 20 cars.

PWC’s Sprint season-opener at St. Pete featured an 11-car starting field, although additional GT entries are expected from GMG Racing and TRG for the Long Beach round.
