While the Prototype Challenge class may be on an off-weekend, it hasn’t stopped Chris Cumming from competing in Saturday’s Chevrolet Sports Car Classic at Detroit’s Belle Isle.
The reigning PC championship runner-up has landed a one-off drive with Scuderia Corsa, rejoining his 2013 co-driver, Kyle Marcelli, at the wheel of the team’s No. 64 Ferrari 458 Italia GT3 for the fifth round of the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship.
Cumming, who partnered with Marcelli to win the final three ALMS races of last year, is set for his GT Daytona class debut.
Marcelli, meanwhile, will make his third start for the Giacomo Mattioli-owned squad after most recently pairing with Stefan Johansson for a 10th place finish at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.
“While we didn’t get the result that we wanted at Laguna Seca, it was great to spend my first weekend behind the wheel of the No. 64 Scuderia Corsa Ferrari 458 Italia and work with the team through a full weekend,” Marcelli said.
“Scuderia Corsa is a great organization and I am really enjoying working with them. It’s clear to see that the results will come, and I am really thrilled that my friend Chris Cumming will be in the Ferrari this weekend. We have enjoyed a lot of success together, and I think he will really enjoy racing the Ferrari on a challenging street circuit like Detroit.”
Cumming is expected to return to RSR Racing’s Oreca FLM09 PC car for the remainder of the season.
