Broc Feeney said he’s “stoked” to be making his U.S. racing debut with Kenny Habul’s 75 Express squad in this weekend’s Battle on the Bricks at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The Triple Eight Race Engineering driver, who currently leads the Repco Supercars championship, has joined the U.S.-based Australian driver and Mercedes-AMG factory ace Mikael Grenier in the team’s GTD Pro class Mercedes-AMG GT3 Evo entry for the six-hour IMSA Michelin Endurance Cup round.

Feeney, who had been trying to put together a deal to make a start in NASCAR this year, received the call-up from Habul, who has long championed rising Australian talent, to take part in the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship race at The Brickyard.

“Me and Kenny have been talking for quite a few years to do a race,” Feeney told Sportscar365.

“I think when I did the 2022 Bathurst 12 Hour, which Kenny won that year, I got to meet him and we’ve been talking ever since to try and do a race.

“It’s always very tough with my calendar and trying to line it up and get over here. But it worked out perfect.

“I raced last weekend and got another three weeks off. It’s perfect timing.”

Feeney said he was impressed upon arriving at Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the first time earlier this week.

“It’s been really cool,” he said. “I suppose for me, just the size of everything is pretty different to what I’m used to. It’s my first time at Indy and first time coming here.

“It’s awesome to be here. There’s obviously so much history and I’ve always wanted to come here and race.

“Coming in and seeing the trucks, the personnel and everything has been a lot bigger than I thought.

“Obviously there was not much practice today but overall I felt like I had a really good start. I got up to speed pretty quick.

“The track is reasonably simple, which is good.”

The Australian, who put the No. 75 SunEnergy1-sponsored entry fourth on the GTD Pro time charts in Friday’s one-and-only practice session, said it was good to be back behind the wheel of the Mercedes-AMG for the first time in more than a year.

While he’s been contesting GT World Challenge Australia powered by AWS in a Melbourne Performance Centre-run Audi R8 LMS GT3 Evo II, Feeeny was part of Triple Eight JMR’s efforts in GTWC Asia and the Asian Le Mans Series in Mercedes-AMG machinery, prior to JMR’s split with the team and switch to the Chevrolet Corvette Z06 GT3.R this year.

When asked what his goals are for the weekend, especially with his entry being dropped into a class that features a heated three-way battle for the GTD Pro title, Feeney stressed they’ll just “focus on ourselves.”

He added: “I don’t know who’s in a battle or what. For me, I just drive as fast as I can and we’ll try and get the best result that we can.

“I’m not going to go out and cause carnage or anything. We’re just going to try and do the best that we can, and obviously get great miles for Kenny and all of us.

“We’ll just focus on ourselves, do the best job we can. I don’t know where that will put us but we seem quite competitive [on Friday] so hopefully we can be in the mix.”

Feeney: “Awesome” to See Habul Supporting Young Aussies Overseas

The 22-year-old becomes the third different Australian pro driver to have driven for the Munich-based 75 Express squad between the last two editions of the Battle on the Bricks, after Habul drafted in Supercars front-runner Chaz Mostert and rising star Jordan Love for last year’s race.

“It’s awesome to see him supporting the young Aussies,” said Feeney. “I’m stoked to be here. It’s my first race in the U.S., which is awesome.

“I’ve been planning on coming here all year around, trying to do some NASCAR stuff but that fell through. I ended up getting to race here finally thanks to Kenny.

“I’m stoked to be here. Hopefully it’s the first of many to come in the future.”

As for his prospects of contesting other WeatherTech Championship races in the future, Feeney has circled January’s Rolex 24 at Daytona as a target.

“Daytona is certainly one,” he said. “It’s good timing of the year. Hopefully I can do a good enough job this weekend that somebody will take me for Daytona next year.

“At the moment, it’s just one race at a time.”
