Genesis will make its debut in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship in 2027, the automaker has confirmed.
The luxury brand of Korean automotive giant Hyundai is set to become the seventh manufacturer in the WeatherTech Championship’s top class, joining Acura, Aston Martin, BMW, Cadillac, Lamborghini and Porsche.
The GMR-001 Hypercar was revealed on Wednesday during a launch event for the brand’s top-level sports car racing program in Dubai.
The debut will be one year after its first campaign in the FIA World Endurance Championship, which is set to take place in 2026.
While it was previously understood that Genesis was aiming to embark on a dual campaign in both championships, the marque had previously only formally confirmed an intention to join the WEC when it announced the creation of its LMDh program.
At the time, it only made mention of its eligibility to compete in the WeatherTech Championship, with IMSA president John Doonan stating he was “eagerly anticipating” more information about the project.
“It’s always good news when a manufacturer confirms its plans to participate in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and we are delighted to welcome Genesis in 2027,” said Doonan on Wednesday.
“The early images of the new Genesis are striking and further validate the LMDh platform, as well as our vision for how manufacturers would utilize it to represent their brands when we co-authored the ruleset alongside our ACO colleagues.
“We’re looking forward to seeing the program continue to develop and join IMSA fans in eager anticipation of Genesis entering WeatherTech Championship GTP competition.”
No word has been given on the operator of the two-car WeatherTech Championship program, although it’s understood that multiple parties have been in discussions.
Unlike the WEC program, which will run under the Genesis Magma Racing banner, the WeatherTech Championship effort will be run with a “partner” team.
