IMSA has reversed its previously confirmed adjustment to the LMP3 class driver ratings requirements for the 2023 WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season, having reinstated this year’s criteria.
Confirmed last week during the release of the 2023 sporting regulations, IMSA was set to change the maximum age for nominated Silver-rated drivers from less than 30 to 25.
This has been reinstated to younger than 30 years old, meaning drivers such as Silver-rated Gar Robinson, will continue to be eligible as his team’s nominated amateur driver.
IMSA rules state that each full-season LMP3 lineup must either feature a Bronze-rated driver or a Silver-rated driver under the age of 30 as of Jan. 1, 2023.
Robinson will be 27 years old at the time of IMSA’s pre-season deadline, although fellow LMP3 competitor Jarett Andretti is set to turn 30 on Dec. 13, meaning he will no longer qualify and would need to be paired either with a Bronze driver or a fellow Silver under the age of 30.
This year, the majority of the other full-season LMP3 teams utilized a Bronze-rated driver which is not subject to age requirements.
There are no such age requirements in any of the other WeatherTech Championship classes.
