Intersport Racing will make its return to top-level IMSA competition after more than a decade away, partnering up with HMD Motorsports to field an LMP2 entry in the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship next year.
Founded in 1998, the Jon Field-led Intersport squad was a mainstay of the American Le Mans Series prototype ranks before dropping off the grid at the end of the 2011 season when the Ohio-based team was absorbed by longtime crew chief Brian Alder, which became BAR1 Motorsports.
Field himself made his return to top-level IMSA competition at this year’s Rolex 24 at Daytona, driving for Inter Europol Competition, in what was initially set to be a full season campaign but ended after only one race.
Intersport’s return to prototype competition will come as part of what Field has described as a “long-term partnership” with single seater squad HMD Motorsports.
The entry will be operated out of HMD’s new facility, located in Brownsburg, Ind., with the team founded by Henry Malukas also currently active in the Indy NXT series.
“I am very excited to be back in IMSA and to see the Intersport Racing name return to the paddock,” said Field.
“This long-term partnership with HMD Motorsports is something I’m truly looking forward to as we head into 2026 with big plans for the future.
“Henry [Malukas, HMD founder] and Mike [Maurini, HMD Motorsports team president] operate a top-tier program in other series, and I know they are motivated to bring that same level of drive and professionalism to IMSA.
“We’ve already been in discussions with several drivers and key partners, and we’ll be on track next week with our LMP2 car for its initial shakedown.
“From there, we have a comprehensive testing program ahead of our debut at the Rolex 24 — and I can’t wait.”
The team is set to shake down its No. 37 Oreca 07 Gibson at Putnam Park on Sept. 16-17, with further running scheduled for the Historic Sportscar Racing (HSR) weekend at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta on Sept. 25-28.
More information about the team’s driver lineup will be revealed in the coming weeks, with the team’s WeatherTech Championship debut to follow at next year’s Rolex 24 at Daytona.
