One of the newest IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship teams is already planning for expansion, as O’Gara Motorsport is set to field a second Lamborghini Huracan GT3 later this year.
The California-based team makes its series debut in the Rolex 24 at Daytona with a single entry for reigning GT Daytona champions Bill Sweedler and Townsend Bell, plus 2015 Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo North America champion Richard Antinucci and season-long co-driver Edoardo Piscopo.
According to team owner Tom O’Gara, the second car could debut at the Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen, or possibly earlier, depending on the delivery schedule.
“I’d love to have it for Laguna but I think they’re saying June,” O’Gara told Sportscar365.
O’Gara indicated Antinucci and Piscopo, who both make their WeatherTech Championship debuts at Daytona, are leading candidates as drivers, although it’s understood a lineup has not yet been finalized.
For now, the team is focused on getting its single Lamborghini off to a strong start in the championship.
“We have our head down and are working our butt off here,” O’Gara said. “We need to pull it together and focus on getting good results here and not start thinking down the road of where we want to get to.
“Right now, I know we need to deal with Daytona and I have everyone fully focused on this race.”
A total of five Lamborghini Huracan GT3s are set to debut in the Rolex 24, including a total of three full-season entries between O’Gara, Change Racing and Paul Miller Racing.
