Tandy Tops Opening Detroit Practice

Nick Tandy ended up quickest in the opening practice session for Saturday’s Chevrolet Detroit Sports Car Classic, leading the way for Porsche Penske Motorsport.

Tandy, in the No. 6 Porsche 963, reeled off a best time of 1:06.899 around the downtown Detroit street circuit to outpace the No. 10 Wayne Taylor Racing with Andretti Acura ARX-06 of Ricky Taylor by 0.806 seconds.

Philipp Eng was third on the time sheets in the No. 24 Team RLL BMW M Hybrid V8, while Renger van der Zande made it four different GTP manufacturers in the top-four, in his No. 01 Chip Ganassi Racing Cadillac V-Series.R.

Nick Yelloly completed the top-five in the No. 25 BMW, ahead of a late improvement by Gianmaria Bruni in the No. 5 Proton Competition Porsche and Jack Aitken’s No. 31 Action Express Racing Cadillac.

Alexander Sims set the quickest time in the GTD Pro ranks, taking the No. 3 Corvette Racing by Pratt Miller Motorsports to a best time of 1:10.509.

It was 0.337 seconds quicker than Joey Hand in the No. 65 Multimatic Motorsports Ford Mustang GT3, who ended up second.

Tommy Milner put the No. 4 Corvette in third, ahead of Albert Costa Balboa in the No. 35 Conquest Racing Ferrari 296 GT3 and class points leader Seb Priaulx, who completed the top-five in class in the No. 77 AO Racing Porsche 911 GT3 R.

The 90-minute session was interrupted with a single red flag for a dislodged manhole cover that halted action for 15 minutes in the early running.

A two-hour long Practice 2 session is scheduled to start at 11:30 a.m. EDT.
