Zach Robichon’s dominance continues.
Coming off a flag-to-flag victory in Race 1 for the Ultra 94 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada by Yokohama on Saturday, Robichon in the No. 98 Mark Motors Porsche repeated his performance Sunday to sweep the weekend at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.
Starting from the pole, Robichon jumped to an early lead over teammate Roman De Angelis in the No. 78 Mark Motors Porsche. Robichon looked to have an easy path to victory, but a mid-race caution – caused by a tangle between the No. 8 of Stefan Rzadzinski and the No. 35 of Michael Di Meo – bunched the pack up and forced Robichon to defend his lead, especially against an eager De Angelis.
However, Robichon wasted no time on the restart and set sail to his second victory of the Victoria Day SpeedFest weekend. The win makes him undefeated through four rounds of Porsche GT3 Cup Canada competition with eight rounds remaining.
“We really had a strong pace and the more we went on, the more we were able to maybe build the gap,” Robichon said. “When I saw Stefan’s car out of Turn 1, I was really hoping he was going to be able to get it out, admittedly.
“I knew Roman was going to be quick after the caution and he was making a couple looks and flashing his headlights on me to remind me he was there, but you know, I just kept head up and kept pushing forward.
“I knew if I didn’t look at him, hopefully I had the pace to keep going, so I just pushed hard and the car was fantastic. The tires held on and our set up was great, so it was really a great finish for the entire Best Line / Mark Motors Team, 1-2-3 and we saw we were really the class of the field this weekend.”
With his fourth win, Robichon opened his championship lead to 20 points over De Angelis, who finished second in both races of the weekend.
Remo Ruscitti in the No. 96 Porsche for OpenRoad Racing took the final podium spot good for third place.
Winning the Yokohama Hard Charger Award – given to the driver who gained the most positions during the race – was Patrick Dussault in the No. 77 Lauzon – GT Racing Porsche.
Dussault started eighth and made several impressive passes to gain four positions, ultimately finishing fourth.
“Our day was trying to be as consistent as possible with the lap times, to get as close as possible to the podium,” Dussault said. “We didn’t have a good qualifying in the rain yesterday, so we had to make up for that and I think we drove pretty well. There were two great passes, in Turn 3 both of them, so we’re overall happy.”
Sweeping the Platinum Masters victories on the weekend was Perry Bortolotti in the No. 84 Mark Motors Racing Porsche.
The two wins tie Bortolotti with Marco Cirone atop the class’ championship leaderboard with eight rounds remaining.
