JDC Motorsports is set for an expansion into the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship for next year, having announced Tuesday plans to run an Oreca FLM09 in the Prototype Challenge class.

The Minneapolis-based squad, which successfully fields cars in the Mazda “Road to Indy” program and IMSA Prototype Lites, has submitted for a 2014 entry.

The team, which will run under the JDC – Miller MotorSports banner, to reflect the addition of John Miller as co-owner in the new venture, has already secured one driver for the season, who will be announced at a later date.

“We wanted to expand our current USF2000, Pro Mazda, and IMSA Prototype Lites programs, and looked at several different options,” said JDC MotorSports team owner John Church. “Since we already run multiple car programs in USF2000 and Pro Mazda, we felt we should look at different alternatives outside of open-wheel racing.

“We have had a lot of talented drivers come up through the ranks in our current Mazda Road to Indy and IMSA Prototype Lites programs, so we felt adding the Prototype Challenge program also provides them with an opportunity and place to go, if and when they decide to switch from open- wheel to sports car racing,”

The team, which expects to begin testing next month, plans to forgo the season-opening Rolex 24 at Daytona and will instead start its program at the Twelve Hours of Sebring.

“We decided it would be best to skip the season-opening 24 hours of Daytona race, since this would not be the right venue to start a new program,” Miller said. “Starting our season at Sebring also will provide us with more lead time in order to be ready.”

With an already oversubscribed PC field, believed to be reaching close to 13 cars, it’s unclear if newcomers JDC will be granted an entry. IMSA’s Scot Elkins previously stated that existing ALMS/GRAND-AM teams would take priority.
