The GTDX category remains an “eligible” class in IMSA VP Racing SportsCar Challenge despite there being no entries for next weekend’s pair of season-opening races at Daytona International Speedway.
An entry list of 20 cars, all comprised of LMP3 and GSX entries, was released by IMSA on Wednesday for the single-driver sprint race series.
Sportscar365 understands there was initially one team that had entered GTDX but withdrew once it became apparent that it would not have any competitors.
Launched in 2025, the category for GT3-based cars ran to a Balance of Performance system without the mandated use of torque sensors that were rolled out in the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship GTD Pro and GTD classes last year.
Instead, GTDX mandated the use of one-year or older GT3 machinery, along with utilizing success ballast, with the same rules in place for the 2026 season per the GTDX technical regulations that were released last month.
Wright Motorsports owner/driver Adam Adelson won the season-long title last year, in a class that had three full season entries but averaged five cars per event.
An IMSA spokesperson told Sportscar365 that the class could return later in the year.
“Unfortunately, there are no entries for the GTDX class for this event,” the spokesperson said. “It remains an eligible class in the IMSA VP Racing SportsCar Challenge should entries materialize in the future.”
Among the nine cars in the headline LMP3 class include three of the latest-generation prototypes in Toyota-powered Ligier JS P325s run by Toney Driver Development and Shopify Racing.
The remainder of the class will have previous-gen LMP3 cars, still powered by Nissan-based V8 engines. IMSA intends not to have any form of BoP between the two different generations of machinery.
GSX, meanwhile, has grown into to a 11-car grid, featuring entries from five different GT4 manufacturers.
The pair of 45-minute races are on tap for Sat. Jan. 17 and Sun. Jan. 18, with live coverage on IMSA’s YouTube Channel and on Peacock.
