Nissan has confirmed its return to the GT4 market with the reveal of a new racing version of the road-going Nissan Z that is due to make its competition debut next year.
The Japanese manufacturer says the Nissan Z GT4, which is being developed by the factory Nismo Racing Division, is intended to be “accessible to enthusiast drivers and hardcore professionals”.
Nismo has tuned the road-going Z model’s VR30DDTT 3-liter twin-turbo V6 engine and made other enhancements in areas such as suspension, aerodynamics and cockpit design to make the vehicle suitable for GT4 homologation and use.
A concept version of the Nissan Z GT4 was entered into this year’s Fuji 24 Hours and also appeared in other Super Taikyu rounds.
Nissan’s most recent foray into the GT4 market came with the 370Z GT4, which last raced full-time in the 2018 British GT Championship.
Nissan and Nismo also previously developed a GT3 car based on the Nissan GT-R, which launched in 2012 and was followed up by a second-generation model in 2018.
In addition to its upcoming GT4 application, the new Z is represented in Super GT’s top GT500 class.
“Motorsports for Nissan is an expression of our passion and unrivaled expertise,” said Nissan COO Ashwani Gupta.
“The Nissan Z continues to maintain its position as an exciting sports car that fascinates drivers with its driving dynamics and flexible powertrain.
“We are confident that this track-ready GT4-category Nissan Z will be ready to write another chapter in the Nissan Z’s 50-plus-year legacy of speed.”
Nissan plans to start deliveries of the Z GT4 in the “first half” of next year, while specific target markets for customer sales have not been announced.
The manufacturer will reveal further details, including technical specifications, at the SEMA show in Las Vegas on Nov. 1-4.
