Ferrari has been stripped of its second-place finish in Saturday’s FIA World Endurance Championship season finale in Bahrain for exceeding its tire allocation.
The No. 51 Ferrari 499P shared by James Calado, Alessandro Pier Guidi and Antonio Giovinazzi finished second, 27.5 seconds behind the race-winning No. 8 Toyota GR010 Hybrid in the eight-hour curtain closer.
But following post-race scrutineering, it was determined by the stewards that the No. 51 car had used 28 tires over the course of qualifying and the race, two more than the 26 permitted by the regulations.
The punishment was a four minute, 55 second time penalty (equivalent to two minutes per tire), converted to the loss of two laps plus an additional 1:10.890, leaving the No. 51 crew down in 14th and last in Hypercar.
It means the No. 5 Penske Porsche 963 of Matt Campbell, Frederic Makowiecki and Michael Christensen is promoted to second, with Campbell having lost the position on the road to Giovinazzi on the final lap of the race.
Peugeot’s No. 93 entry shared by Mikkel Jensen, Jean-Eric Vergne, Nico Mueller steps up to third place, giving the French marque a first podium of the season, ahead of the No. 35 Alpine A424 and the No. 15 BMW M Hybrid V8.
