Ferrari Hypercar driver Nicklas Nielsen has renewed his contract with the Italian manufacturer in what is understood to be a multi-year extension.
The 26-year-old Dane finished third in the FIA Hypercar World Endurance Drivers Championship alongside Antonio Fuoco and Miguel Molina in his first season of top-level prototype competition.
Nielsen launched his racing career in Ferrari Challenge and won the 2018 global title before stepping up to mixed-manufacturer competition in GT3 and GTE the next year.
Strong results including a European Le Mans Series GTE title soon drew the attention of Ferrari’s motorsport management who signed him to a factory contract for 2020.
Nielsen then won back-to-back GTE-Am titles in the WEC and also took victory in the 2021 CrowdStrike 24 Hours of Spa en route to the Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe powered by AWS Endurance Cup title, all with AF Corse.
In addition to winning last year’s WEC LMP2 Pro-Am title with the Italian team, Nielsen became involved in the development of the Ferrari 499P and was selected as one of the six drivers for the 2023 campaign.
Sportscar365 understands that the contract extension covers multiple seasons although Ferrari has not communicated on the length.
“I’m very happy to have renewed my contract with Ferrari,” said Nielsen.
“I think we’ve had great seasons together, especially this year with the Hypercar, and I’m looking forward moving forward on this journey by continuing the development of the 499P ahead of the 2024 season.”
Ferrari has stated that Nielsen will “continue his career in the main endurance competitions” next year.
The manufacturer’s global head of endurance racing Antonello Coletta told Sportscar365 last week that the current plan is to make no changes to the Hypercar lineup.
“Nicklas is a fast, young driver who grew up in the Ferrari family,” Coletta said following Nielsen’s contract renewal.
“Following victory in the one-make series, he has racked up at least one international title every season until 2022, before finishing third this year in the FIA WEC Drivers’ standings. We’re proud to renew his contract.”
