Fabio Scherer will miss this weekend’s 8 Hours of Portimao after testing positive for COVID-19 and will be replaced in United Autosports’ LMP2 driver lineup by Wayne Boyd.
Scherer was due to share the No. 22 Oreca 07 Gibson with Phil Hanson and Paul di Resta, who is subbing for the IMSA-tied Filipe Albuquerque at round two of the FIA World Endurance Championship in Portugal.
Ex-DTM driver Scherer is the current LMP2 points leader alongside Hanson and Albuquerque after the trio won last month’s WEC season-opener at Spa-Francorchamps.
A stewards’ bulletin issued at 9:36 a.m. on Friday morning confirmed that Scherer tested positive for COVID-19 twice in the last 48 hours.
His replacement, Boyd, is the reigning European Le Mans Series LMP3 champion and is set for his WEC race debut.
Boyd currently drives for United Autosports in the ELMS LMP3 ranks, sharing a car with Edouard Cauhaupe and Rob Wheldon.
