McLaren will return to DTM for the first time since 2021 as the debuting Doerr Motorsport team will field a pair of McLaren 720S GT3 Evos.
The Frankfurt-based stable has committed to its first season in the German sprint series after previously racing GT3 and GT4 machinery at the Nürburgring Nordschleife.
The team forms part of the Doerr Group, which operates luxury car dealerships in Germany and sells McLaren road cars as part of its portfolio of brands that also includes the likes of Bugatti, Lamborghini and Aston Martin,
Clemens Schmid joins the team after two seasons with GRT Grasser Racing Team to spearhead its lineup.
“To be able to compete in the DTM again, and with such an exceptional vehicle and team package as Dörr Motorsport offers with McLaren, fills me with pride,” Schmid said.
“To be able to help develop and drive forward a project like this as part of the team from the very beginning is a rare and precious opportunity.”
The team’s second McLaren will be piloted by Ben Doerr, the son of company founder and team owner Rainer Doerr.
The 19-year-old gained GT3 experience at the wheel of an Aston Martin Vantage GT3 in last year’s Nürburgring 24, notably teaming up with Aston Martin factory driver Darren Turner.
“I’m incredibly excited about the new and first season in the DTM,” Doerr said.
“Motorsport is what I love, and the will to win spurs me on each race again and again.
“The team behind Doerr Motorsport is like a second family to me, so I couldn’t feel better prepared for this challenge. I’m sure we have an exciting year ahead of us!”
McLaren last competed in DTM during the series’ first year under GT3 regulations in 2021, when JP Motorsport fielded a single car for former Grand Prix racer Christian Klein for three rounds.
