This year’s Gulf 12 Hours marks a number of great premieres and one further attraction is the first-ever appearance of the Renault Sport R.S. 01 in an endurance race, featuring a GT3 package.
The Dutch Team Equipe Verschuur, which has been competing in motorsport since 1978 and completed more than twenty 24-hours-races, will compete with one new Renault R.S. 01 in the GT3 class.
For long distance racing, Renault built a specific GT3 package with the right specifications. Running with this package means the car lacks eight seconds to its normal performance.
“We can drive in a lot of championships with this car, because depending on the specifications, we can run in different categories”, says Frans Verschuur, Team Owner Equipe Verschuur. “We are very slow here compared what we are normally capable of.
“Generally speaking, the Renault R.S. 01 is a trophy-version, but is also suited for endurance racing. Renault built a car that can do multi-things and that is the importance of this car, because we can do a lot of championships.
“The car we have in Abu Dhabi is 2kg heavier and features iron brakes, like a normal road car. ”
The sister-car took victory in a 500km race in Holland two weeks ago and the car competing in the 5th edition of the Gulf 12 Hours came second in the Renault Sport Trophy this year.
With the Renault R.S. 01, Renault has restated its passion for motorsport, a racing car of spectacular styling and exceptional performance.
With a design inspired by the world of concept cars and governed by an absolute pursuit of aerodynamic downforce, Renault Sport R.S. 01 is a radical expression of the brand’s sporting DNA.
Drivers Miguel Ramos, Filipe Barreiros, Jerome Naveaux and Jean-Pierre Lequeux will take behind the wheel of the Renault R.S. 01 for the event that takes place on Friday.
