The first batch of Ford Mustang Dark Horse Rs are on their way from the U.S. to Australia in preparation for the launch of the all-new one-make Ford Mustang Cup Australia series next year.

Twelve of the 5.0-liter Coyote V8-powered Dark Horse Rs are expected to dock in Sydney in October. The remaining cars are due to arrive before the end of the year.

In total, there will be 25-plus Dark Horse Rs available and ready for competition in 2026.

The Mustangs are initially constructed at Ford’s Flat Rock Assembly Plant in Michigan before being moved to nearby Watson Racing – Ford’s technical partner for the Mustang one make entry – to transform them into race-ready rockets.

Following the initial shipment of 12 to Australia, owners, teams and drivers who have been first to secure the turn-key Mustangs will undergo a hand over process and official welcome to Mustang Cup Australia.

The all-Mustang racing series debuted in the U.S. in 2024, and in 2026, Australia will become the second market to embrace the new one-make category.

The series offers aspiring young guns, gentleman drivers and more the opportunity to compete in identical rear-wheel-drive V8-powered cars on Australia’s best racing circuits.

Featuring official support from Ford Performance, leading Australian motorsport event management company Driving Solutions will spearhead the new series with respected administrator Liam Curkpatrick appointed as series manager.

“It’s really exciting to see the first 12 Dark Horse Rs complete and ready for delivery,” said Curkpatrick.

“We’ve been kept informed through the construction and build process and it’s been amazing to see the attention to detail that goes into each and everyone of these cars.

“Since officially launching the class for Australia, we have received incredible enquiry from a wide range of teams, competitors and industry stakeholders.

“With the backing of Ford Performance both locally and for the USA, combined with a quality calendar and broadcast package, we feel this class offers everything and more for all levels of drivers and teams.”

Miedecke Motorsport, run by Andrew and George Miedecke, are Multimatic’s Australian and New Zealand agents and are responsible for distributing the Dark Horse Rs, as well as offering trackside parts supply and technical assistance.

The inaugural Mustang Cup Australia series will be a key support category to the SRO Motorsports Australia-promoted Shannons SpeedSeries in 2026, starting at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit on March 27-29.
