Acura IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship racer Renger van der Zande will tackle this year’s Nürburgring 24 at the wheel of HWA’s EVO.R recreation of the 1990s Mercedes 190E EVO II DTM machine.
HWA revealed last month that it was going to field three of its newly built cars in the Nordschleife enduro with the sons of two of the original machine’s drivers, Luca Ludwig and Sebastian Asch, announced behind the wheel alongside Markus Winkelhock.
Now van der Zande has been confirmed as joining the lineup, tackling the May 16-17 race in a very different sort of machine to his most recent outing in 2023 with a Scherer Sport Audi R8 LMS GT3 Evo II, while he finished second in 2016 with a Mercedes-AMG GT3.
The Dutchman, who was a big fan of the DTM growing up, had the chance to test the HWA car earlier this week and described it as “really fun.”
“I did a couple of laps on the Nordscleife in the wet and it’s tricky but the car is behaving,” he said.
“It’s pretty impressive that HWA built a car like that in 100 days – they decided last November and we’re going to race it in May.
“I’m super proud to be a part of it, it’s super cool to be in one of those cars.”
The original 190E was one of the star cars of the DTM and took the 1992 title with Klaus Ludwig, while Roland Asch was sixth that year.
