VLN and DMSB have announced a change to the Nordschleife Permit regulations, outlining that participation in the virtual Digital Nürburgring Endurance Series (DNLS) will now count towards obtaining a B-Permit.

The DNLS is an esports championship taking place during the winter months, which is hosted on sim racing platform iRacing.

In previous years, drivers with an international D-level circuit license were able to obtain their B-Permit through various methods, which included participating in two RCN races with a teammate or driving one event solo.

An alternative method, as was completed by four-time Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen ahead of his NLS debut with Lionspeed GP, was to participate in a training course.

However, starting with the upcoming DNLS season, which kicks off on Dec. 6, qualified drivers will also be also to obtain their B-Permit by competing in the virtual championship.

In order to qualify, drivers must already be in possession of an International D License and then complete three out of four DNLS races without receiving any penalties.

Once that is completed, the only other requirement to secure a B-Permit is taking part in an RCN performance test, where two drivers can take turns.

VLN notes that the training course, which Verstappen took, also remains available as a means of securing the B-Permit.

Christian Vormann, VLN sporting director, cited Verstappen’s recent successful foray into Nordschleife racing as a key reason for the regulation change, pointing out that the Dutchman gained extensive experience of the circuit in sim racing prior to making his real-life debut.

“Since the introduction of the DNLS in 2020, we know that sim racing is not just a fun pastime, but also reflects reality in a more than adequate way.

“In addition, Max Verstappen’s recent participation in an NLS race showed how important virtual preparation is, especially on the notorious Nordschleife.

“Without a doubt, as a four-time Formula 1 world champion, he is an exceptionally good racing driver, but the fact that he was able to win his very first GT3 race right away surprised many.

“The Dutchman’s secret: sim racing. Verstappen has completed countless laps in the Green Hell in the iRacing simulation, including in the DNLS.  So it was no surprise that he got to grips with it very quickly.

“The DMSB deserves great praise for this courageous step in recognizing virtual racing as proof for the DPN, and we are proud to offer the first platform for this with the DNLS.”
