A spectator has been killed and several others injured following a massive accident in the opening round of the VLN series at the Nürburgring Nordschleife on Saturday.

The No. 23 Nissan GT-R NISMO GT3 of Jann Mardenborough caught air at Flugplatz and ended up on its roof on the spectator side of the catch fencing.

Race Control immediately red-flagged the race, in order to get rescue teams to the site safely.

One spectator was pronounced dead at the medical center, while four others have been transported to a local hospital.

Nissan GT Academy graduate Mardenborough climbed from the car and has been taken to a local hospital for routine checks.

The race was officially abandoned after the second-hour accident.

Nissan has issued the following statement:

“Today’s events have been a tragedy. We are all deeply shocked and saddened by these events and our immediate thoughts go to the deceased, those injured and their families and friends.

“The team is fully co-operating with the race organizers to conduct an immediate and thorough investigation into this incident.”
