GT3 Cars Confirmed for GT Sports Club America

GT3 cars will be permitted to enter SRO Motorsports Group’s newly renamed GT Sports Club America next year alongside GT2 machinery, as part of an overhaul of the new-for-2020 series that was confirmed this week.

Announced during Thursday’s ‘State of the Series’ presentation at the PRI show in Indianapolis, current and previous-generation GT3 models will be eligible in order to “reach a wider group” of drivers.

As revealed by Sportscar365 in October, SRO America had been considering adding GT3 cars to Sports Club America, which will feature a pair of single-driver 40-minute races on five weekends next year.

The series, which is designed for Bronze-rated drivers, will feature three classes: Overall, Iron Cup, for drivers 60 or older, and Titanium Cup, for those between 50-59 years old.

A compressed weekend schedule will include free practice and qualifying in an anticipated two-day format, although with optional Thursday test days. 

Races will be held at Virginia International Raceway, Sonoma Raceway, Road America, Watkins Glen and Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The North American-based series builds on the success of SRO’s GT Sports Club Europe, which averaged 12-15 GT3 cars this year and included a cameo appearance by an Audi R8 LMS GT2 car in the season finale at Barcelona.

Confirmation of GT3 cars in the American series expands the platform’s eligibility to two SRO America-run championships next year, with GT3 machinery still at the core of GT World Challenge America, which shifts to Pro-Am.
