The Meguiar’s Bathurst 12 Hour was red-flagged in the ninth hour after a major crash involving race leader Ralf Aron in the Craft-Bamboo Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3 Evo.
Aron, who had taken the lead aboard the No. 77 Mercedes-AMG at the previous caution, was powerless to avoid the spun Tsunami RT Porsche 911 GT3 R approaching Forrest’s Elbow, plowing into the side of the car driven by Johannes Zelger.
The Estonian driver, making his Bathurst 12 Hour debut, had nowhere to go as the Volante Rosso Aston Martin Vantage GT3 was also blocking the circuit.
It left the race-leading car with terminal damage, while Aron appeared to exit the car under his own power but was seen lying down at the side of the track.
It was later revealed by the official broadcast that Aron, who is in stable condition, would be transported to hospital in the nearby town of Orange.
Zelger, meanwhile, exited the Tsunami RT car unaided.
Race control took the decision to red-flag the Intercontinental GT Challenge season opener with three hours, 40 minutes left on the clock.
The 75 Express Mercedes-AMG of Luca Stolz inherited the lead as a result of the incident, ahead of the GruppeM Mercedes-AMG of Maro Engel.
