Supercars race winner James Moffat will contest the opening round of Motorcraft Mustang Cup Australia at Phillip Island, sporting a livery made famous by his late father Allan.

Moffat will contest the inaugural event in a Dark Horse R, featuring a replica livery of his father Allan’s legendary Ford Mustang Trans Am.

Garry Rogers Motorsport will enter and run the car, continuing Moffat and GRM’s ten-year partnership.

Confirmation of Moffat’s challenge adds another household name to the Motorcraft Mustang Cup Australia entry list, which already includes his long time friend Jack Perkins.

Moffat and Perkins will compete against a strong field of previously announced drivers, including a mix of young guns and seasoned campaigners.

Moffat and GRM’s entry for Phillip Island will feature the famous red colours across the Dark Horse R.

The livery pays tribute to his father’s Kar Kraft-constructed Mustang Trans Am, which Ford gifted him and debuted at Sandown’s Southern 60 event in 1969.

Backed by Coca-Cola, Allan and the mighty Mustang went on to win 78 out of the 188 races they contested, creating an iconic Australian motor racing combination.

“I’m excited to experience the cars and see what the series is all about,” said Moffat.

“By all reports, it looks like a fairly solid grid for the first-ever round, and I’ll get to race against one of my old mates Jack Perkins, so that’ll be a bit of fun. Hopefully there won’t be too much fender bending!

“It’s always great to race against Jack, and I’m sure we’ll keep it clean, but I’m genuinely excited to get down to Philip Island and see what it’s all about.

“Running these colors is a good tip of the hat to my dad’s achievements. It’s a look that he is probably most synonymous with and celebrated for.

“To represent that on the track, in a new category that Ford is pushing, was the best way for myself and GRM to honor his legacy.

“It’s great to see that the category has significant backing from the Ford Motor Company. That’s going to be important for the growth of the series.

“You can see across the world that Ford is showing serious commitment to its racing activities, which is fantastic for competitors and fans.

“To have the Blue Oval behind it and engaged is a big positive.

“GRM is really my racing family in many ways these days. I’ve been with them basically non-stop since 2016. I finished my full-time Supercars career with them and then had success in Trans Am and TCR in recent times.

“It’s hard for me to think of doing any racing of some form without Barry (Rogers) and the team.

“And like we always do, we’ll give it our best shot and hopefully come home with some trophies.”

The inaugural round of Mustang Cup Australia will be held at Phillip Island on March 25-27 as part of the Shannons SpeedSeries.
