A last-lap gasp from Adderly Fong has denied RealTime Racing a front-row sweep and put Bentley Team Absolute on pole for this afternoon’s Pirelli World Challenge round at Road America.
Fong scored his first career PWC pole, with the Hong Kong driver laying down a quick lap of 2:05.352 in his No. 88 Bentley Continental GT3 in the closing moments in the 20-minute session.
It was enough to eek out the No. 43 RealTime Acura TLX-GT of Ryan Eversley by 0.179 seconds, with Eversley’s teammate Peter Cunningham demoted to third, after topping the time charts for most of the session.
The pole for Fong comes just one race after his teammate Andrew Palmer’s accident at Lime Rock Park. The Chinese squad has fielded only a single Bentley this weekend, while Palmer remains in hospital.
The No. 58 Wright Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 R of Patrick Long will line up fourth, with a 2:05.634 lap time as the best of the normally aspirated entries.
Cadillac Racing’s Johnny O’Connell and Michael Cooper completed the top-six, which was separated by less than seven-tenths.
In GTA, Frankie Montecalvo scored his second class pole of the season, taking his DIME Racing Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 to a 2:06.566.
It was some three-tenths quicker than the No. 16 Wright Porsche of Michael Schein, who was second, with Martin Fuentes set to start third in class.
GTA pole-sitter Montecalvo will roll off from 13th overall on the grid.
Alec Udell, meanwhile, claimed top qualifying honors in GT Cup, his third of the year.
The GMG Racing driver edged out the No. 00 Motorsports Promotions Porsche 911 GT3 Cup of Corey Fergus by 0.644 seconds.
Race 1 for GT/GTA/GT Cup is set for 4:30 p.m. CT with live coverage on MotorTrend on Demand and World-Challenge.com.
