Spike Kohlbecker claimed victory in the season-opening Toyota GR Cup North America race at Arlington, following a hard-fought battle with Jeremy Fletcher in a race that ended under yellow.
The TechSport driver, who started second with a non-functioning transponder, got around pole-sitter Fletcher on Lap 8 following two early full-course cautions and restarts.
The two Toyota GR86 Cup cars exchanged the lead through several sequences that also saw third-placed Parker DeLong and Max Schweid in the fight.
Kohlbecker held off the Copeland Motorsports driver in the closing minutes until the No. 80 Copeland Toyota of Paityn Feyen slammed into the wall with six minutes to go, which led the race to end under caution.
Schweid, in the No. 98 RVA Graphics Motorsports by Speed Syndicate entry, completed the podium in third after getting by DeLong with 16 minutes left on the clock that demoted the No. 42 TechSport machine to fourth.
Will Robusto, who charged through the field, completed the top-five in the No. 2 Speed Syndicate Toyota, while Jenson Sofronas was sixth in another Copeland-run entry.
Eagles Canyon w/ Fast Track’s Patrick Brunson, meanwhile, took the WWEX Group Legends class win with a 16th place finish overall.
The first caution came out on the opening lap when Jason Kos in the No. 33 Dream Machine @ Eagles Canyon entry went off course, which was followed by a multi-car pileup that involved Beltre Curtis, Joseph Maley and Michael Edwards.
While action restarted with 35 minutes left on the clock, a stoppage for the No. 85 Eagles Canyon w/ Fast Track Toyota of Ava Schletz put the field behind the safety car yet again.
The race-winning pass was then made moments after the second restart, which ultimately put Kohlbecker into victory lane.
Qualifying for Race 2 is on tap for 4:20 p.m. CST this afternoon, followed by the final 45-minute race of the weekend on Sunday at 8 a.m., with live coverage on SRO’s GT World YouTube channel and on GRCup.com.
