Max Schweid stormed to pole position for the opening race of the Toyota GR Cup North America weekend at Road America with a late improvement to lead a TechSport 1-2 in a tight qualifying battle.
Schweid used his fourth of five total laps around the Wisconsin circuit to propel his No. 98 TechSport Toyota GR86 to the top of the times, laying down a 2:30.365 lap to edge out stablemate and series debutant Parker DeLong in the No. 47 machine by a mere 0.031 seconds.
With TechSport occupying the front row of the grid, Copeland Motorsport’s Jeremy Fletcher drove his No. 22 GR86 to third on the time sheets, just 0.082 seconds down on Schweid’s benchmark.
Ethan Goulart put a third TechSport car in the overall top five, setting the fourth-best time of the session ahead of Will Robusto in fifth.
Early session leader Jaxon Bell will start Race 1 from sixth ahead of Spike Kohlbecker in seventh.
Livio Galanti was the highest-qualifying Legends Cup driver, locking in the ninth fastest time in Qualifying 1 with current points-leader Westin Workman starting just behind in tenth.
Practice leader Lucas Weisenberg appeared to stop his No. 46 GR86 near the end of the session, though qualifying running was not impacted. With the Lucas Racing driver unable to improve his time, he will roll off the grid 14th for Saturday afternoon’s Race 1.
Race 1 of the GR Cup North America weekend takes the green flag at 2:05 p.m. CST with live coverage available on SRO’s GT World YouTube and Twitch channels as well as grcup.com.
