Bryan Sellers led an extended Pirelli World Challenge practice session in mixed conditions on the streets of Long Beach, nipping the newly-promoted Alec Udell in the final moments to claim top honors.
Sellers’ fast time of 1:20.630 in the No. 6 K-PAX Racing McLaren 650S GT3 came on his final flying lap, narrowly edging Udell’s GMG Racing Porsche 911 GT3 R by just 0.005 seconds.
Pierre Kaffer, Patrick Long, and Alvaro Parente completed the top-five.
Mike Hedlund led the GTA division in his K-PAX Racing McLaren.
Adderly Fong in the No. 88 Absolute Racing Bentley Continental GT3 suffered the lone incident of the session, making significant contact with the wall in Turn 11 after attempting an off-line pass and losing traction on pavement that was not completely dry.
DIME Racing elected to not take part in the practice, but their Lamborghini Huracan GT3 was on the grid and is expected to qualify.
Race officials elected to extend the practice session to 30 minutes following the morning crew chief’s meeting to account for a track surface that was still damp from overnight rains.
Competitors started the session on Pirelli’s wet tires before gradually switching to slicks midway through the practice as the track dried.
Rapidly improving conditions meant that the top times fluctuated frequently in the minutes.
PWC cars and teams jump directly into qualifying mode with a 20-minute joint GT/GTA session scheduled for 9:25 a.m. PT.
